Cars is the second Pixar film, after Toy Story, to have a sequel. John Lasseter, the director of the film, said that he conceived the sequel's story while traveling around the world promoting the first film. He said: Template:Quote Cars 2 was originally scheduled for a summer 2012 release, but Pixar moved the release up by a year. In 2009, Disney registered several domain names in relation to the title World Grand Prix.[6] Originally it was announced that Randy Newman would return to score the film,[7] but it was later revealed that he had been replaced by fellow Pixar collaborator Michael Giacchino, making it the fourth Pixar film scored by Giacchino after The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up.Template:Citation needed

Three voice actors of the original Cars died since the first film had been released.

  • Joe Ranft (who voiced Red and Peterbilt) died in a car accident on August 16, 2005 during production of the first film.
  • George Carlin (who voiced Fillmore) died of heart failure on June 22, 2008. Fillmore was voiced by Brian George in Cars Mater-National, Mark Silverman in Cars Race-O-Rama and archive recordings were used for his voice in the Cars Toons episode Unidentified Flying Mater.
  • Paul Newman (who voiced Doc Hudson) died on September 26, 2008 after losing an ongoing cancer battle. Lasseter was at first adamant that Newman would return, though he had announced his retirement from acting. After Newman's death he said they would "see how the story goes with Doc Hudson".[8] Doc Hudson was voiced by Corey Burton in Cars Mater-National and Cars Race-O-Rama.

No confirmation has been made on if Brian George, Mark Sliveman and Corey Burton will be respective replacement voice cast for Fillmore and Doc Hudson, or if the characters will not be included.
